Promoting astrophysics in Viet Nam: an effort of over two decades (Prof. Pierre Dariulat – VNSC, Hanoi, Vietnam)

July 21 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Speaker: Prof. Pierre Dariulat (VNSC, Hanoi, Vietnam).

Abstract: Between 2001 and 2014 the Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology in Ha Noi helped us with starting a new research effort by welcoming us in its premises. We started with research on cosmic rays, first on our own, then within the International Pierre Auger collaboration, becoming the Vietnam Auger Training Laboratory (VATLY). We then prepared ourselves to switch to stellar astrophysics by doing research of our own using a small radio telescope and starting a collaboration with astronomers in France. Since 2015 we became the Department of Astrophysics of the Vietnam National Space Center, an institute of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, where we do research in stellar physics, both protostars and evolved stars, and on the early Universe; and both on our own and in collaboration with astronomers in France and in Asia.

I shall recall the main episodes of this adventure and review both what we succeeded and what we failed to accomplish, trying to learn lessons from this experience and identify the main directions along which we hope to progress.

The public lecture will be given in the framework of the 8th Vietnam School of Astrophysics (8th VSOA).

Venue: ExploraScience Quy Nhon.
